her name is mel. that's all that people find certain of about her: her name. and even then her name changes with her mood, she's got two of them, and a few others you don't know of.

i've been watching season 1 grey's and i'm really sad about the putrid mess we have to watch now in s3. s1 izzie and george (SEPARATELY, mind you) ... how i miss them. total devolution.

i think things all went downhill after george slept with meredith and callie cut his hair. gah!!

the thing about the theater kids i've encountered here is that they're either heavily into improv or musical theater. america seems to have a VERY STRONG musical theater culture ... which i did not realize until i came here.

and honestly, while i will stomach some classics like Les Mis and Rent (i don't even like Phantom much) and of course Moulin Rouge (but that's film) - everytime someone learns i'm into theater and says, 'so you're going to broadway upon graduation, eh?' i have no idea how to respond. i don't like musicals. far too staged, campy, big scale. musicals make me cringe a lot, and i honestly feel uncomfortable watching them sometimes. they are just too ... much. the make-up, the big hair, the singing every line, the synchronised dancing, choreography, the moving props. i can appreciate the amount of effort, artistry and talent goes into those things but i don't really like it. i'm interested in creating theater that is raw, intimate and real.

so how?

i feel like i'm stuck in the wrong place. chicago - the city that created improv, basically. what with Second City and all (i mean, Tina Fey studied HERE to get to SNL!). and with regard to musicals, i think after NYC, we're a pretty close second - maybe even tied. the thing is, i look for show listings and i can't find any production that interests me except for Pinter's Betrayal at the Steppenwolf. i cannot feel the same excitement as most people feel about seeing Wicked - yes, i am weird! everyone loves musicals but me! maybe the type of theater i'm interested in seeing is very much an underground culture and not popular? i do not know, maybe i should consider setting up my own RSO here, if only i could find people who share these views.
